The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Review

Day 24 is a tricky one for me. I’ve always viewed it as a Christmas movie, seeing as Halloween only takes up the first 5 minutes. There’s too much of a festive feeling for me to enjoy this at Halloween. Everything Wrong With & Honest Trailer

Jack Skellington is getting tired with every Halloween being the same old thing. While walking through the forest, he comes across a small circle of trees, each with a different image drawn on the trunk and a door knob. As he inspects the tree with the Christmas tree (That’s right, a tree drawn on a tree), the door opens and a gust of wind and snow sweeps him into the magical new world of Christmastown. Jack becomes enchanted by the spectacles and traditions he sees in this strange new place, causing him to take it back to Halloweentown and propose to the other residents to make a Christmas of their own.

It’s very entertaining and interesting to see these scary Halloween themed characters create Christmas in their own style in perfect Tim Burton fashion. This movie shows us that not only is Danny Elfman a fantastic composer, he can sing as well, providing the singing voice of Jack. Although having previously being part of the band Oingo Boingo (singers of “Weird Science”), he is well experienced. Sally, Jack’s love interest, is voiced by Catherine O’Hara, who previously starred in Beetlejuice, and would later go on to voice in Frankenweenie, two other Tim Burton movies. She’s probably most known for playing the mother in Home Alone. She does her own singing, and sings her little heart out in the solo entitled “Sally’s Song”. It’s genuinely heartbreaking and beautiful. Speaking of songs, the soundtrack is essential Halloween party music. It sets the tone of every scene, even though the scenes go from dark and creepy, to bright and happy, the music switches and works perfectly.

I love the look of the characters. Jack looks rather creepy, which contrasts his personality. Sally is like a Frankenstein’s monster-style living rag doll. It’s funny that she can just sew herself back together if she needs to. She was created by Doctor Finklestein, a take on Doctor Frankenstein, and a mad scientist.

If you haven’t seen this movie, then where have you been? It’s twenty five years old! Go watch it now!

POP! I have both Sally and Pumpkin Jack.

Tomorrow we’re going back 10 years for a home invasion that produced a long-awaited sequel this year. Is Tamra there?
